ARTIST

Hiroki Mori

With a playful touch, bold and delicate.

Red Mt. Fuji painted in rich, thick oil pastel, and European streetscapes drawn lightly in ballpoint pen and watercolor markers. Familiar views and scenes that caught his heart, seen through his own cheerful eyes. A playful painting that makes everyday scenery look a little different.

The feelings behind the work

Everyone in Japan carries their own image of Mt. Fuji. Painted freely with the thought “Wouldn’t it be fun to draw it like this?”, his red Fuji is a work that says, “This is my Mt. Fuji.” In Japan a red Fuji is considered a lucky symbol, which makes it a lovely celebration gift, too. His streetscapes were inspired by old black-and-white European films, imagining the lives being lived beyond the buildings.

Style and motifs

With oil pastels, which he calls “crayons for grown-ups,” he combines the easygoing feel of childhood doodles with the rich, thick look of oil paint. In his red Fuji, the base color is left showing to bring out the outline, beneath clouds that curl into swirls. His finely penned streetscapes feature soft colors, and even a gentleman carrying a gift box.
